10 Tips to a Better Dance Floor
When we ask our couples what defines success for their wedding, a fun dance floor is almost always included in the answer. Making sure both the couple and their guests have an amazing time, feel engaged throughout the night, and really love being on the dance floor is certainly something that makes the event unforgettable.
Here are 10 Tips to help you have a better dance floor experience.
Position the DJ close to the dance floor. It allows for better engagement with your guests & positioning of sound & lighting.
As the host, get on the dance floor as often as you can. When you do, the excitement & engagement goes way up, because your guests are there because of you.
Talk with your DJ about allowing requests & the parameters for which to allow them. Good requests help create crowd engagement.
Set the mood with lighting. It results in a unique environment & fun atmosphere, plus colors invoke emotions & low light lessens inhibitions.
During planning, match your music to your guests & goals. Ask yourself what you want to hear, what your guests want to hear, and who will be the ones dancing.
Set the mood during cocktail hour & dinner. While those timeframes serve other purposes as well, they do set the mood & build up to dancing.
Work in a few slow songs. A slow song has a general appeal & also lessens inhibitions. Once on the dance floor, the next song needs to keep them there!
For the same reason they’re overplayed, group/common dance songs can help get people on the dance floor. You don’t have to use them, and certainly don’t overuse, but they do act as ice-breakers for some guests.
Find a DJ who can carry a conversation. The DJ is often also the MC & needs to be able to engage your guests on, and off, the mic. Talk with him/her about that.
Personalize your music with stories. Have the DJ say a sentence or two about some songs and why they’re special, who they’re for, etc. That makes it unique, keeps your guests engaged, and helps create moments.
