Understanding Industry Pricing
What DJs and event pros charge for services feels like it's all over the place right? I'm sure if you're reading this as an engaged couple or someone planning any event, it can probably be confusing and frustrating trying to figure out pricing. Heck, fellow pros have trouble figuring out other pros pricing at times. Throw on a weird economy and everyone's pricing seems confusing. We're going to simplify that for you. Just remember TEE.
The T = Time. Ask your pros how much time is being invested in your day. There's simple economics to this question. The more time invested in you, the higher the cost. The less time, the less cost. More time invested in you means fewer chances of mistakes and better personalization. The opposite - well, I'm not sure that's something you want to risk big moments to. For us at Carolina DJ Professionals, you talk to your DJ from the start, and they invest 20-40 hours of preparation into your day before the wedding or event day even arrives. Then we have a management team who is also investing considerable hours into your DJ, your vendors, your day, and your details.
The E = Experience. The simple fact is this: more experience costs more money. And...more experience means fewer mistakes, a smoother process, more creativity, and better guidance. You may find someone with lesser experience who does great. But you may not. And you must ask yourself - is the risk/reward worth it? When you hire a DJ, or any vendor, with experience - you're getting someone who has spent years and years seeing things that worked, things that didn't, building ideas, improving efficiency, and creating results. Because if they didn't get the results over time...they wouldn't still be doing this. So choose experience. You'd do it with a doctor, mechanic, teacher, construction, etc. - so why would you not choose it on the biggest day of your life? For us, owner Troy Adams has been DJing weddings & events for over 25 years and actually educates the industry on weddings & events. That knowledge gets passed down to our industry-leading training. And along with his knowledge, our veteran DJs all have 5-25 years' experience each. Collectively our team has over 250 years of doing weddings. We're ready to handle pretty much anything that's thrown at us.
The Other E = Equipment. Whether it's equipment, inventory or resources, there is a cost to the products used to perform your wedding and event. DJs, photographers & videographers all have equipment to invest in. Venues are made up of finishes, decor and landscaping. And of course the actual real-estate lot, aka location, views, character. Caterers have food costs, quality linens, plateware, silverware, etc. You get the point. And like everything else in life - quality costs money. You want a nice view? It costs more than staring at a parking lot. You want high-quality images? They require both experience and quality equipment. And in our realm - if you want good-looking setups and quality sound - it costs more money than listening to speakers that sound like an overblown car stereo or looking at an ugly DJ setup.
So there you have it. Use TEE to help navigate your way through wedding & event pricing. And actually - use that for just about any industry. What you want to remember is this: when someone is charging less, it means you're likely sacrificing something from Time, Experience, Equipment. The other factors are overhead and profit. But time (labor), experience (profit), and equipment/resources (overhead) all factor into those. Decide what's most important to you and then ask the questions to your pros. Being informed and having genuine conversations will lead to better decisions...and better events.
